"Every Artist was First an Amateur - Ralph Waldo Emerson"
Starting on the path of artistry is exciting but can be daunting. In this blog post, I'll guide you through the three stages of learning, providing insights that would have been invaluable at the beginning of my own artistic journey. My hope is that sharing these stages will inspire and guide you on your creative path.
Stage1: The “How” Stage.
The journey begins here – the "How" stage. At this point, you're like a blank canvas, full of enthusiasm and curiosity. You're eager to try something new, but you may not know where to start. It's perfectly normal to be in this stage; it's where every artist begins.
In the "How" stage, you seek answers to questions like, "How do I paint watercolor roses?" You follow tutorials, mimic artists you admire (a form of learning, not copying when credited), and gradually build your skills. It's a crucial foundation where you grasp techniques and gain confidence. But as you grow, you'll start to wonder, "Why?"
Stage 2: The "Why" Stage.
Now, you've moved into the "Why" stage. You've grasped the basics, but your curiosity goes deeper. You want to understand the rationale behind artistic choices. Why use a round brush instead of a filbert brush? Why apply one layer before another?
To dive into the "Why" stage, consider workshops or classes. Platforms like Skillshare offer in-depth lessons that explore the thought process behind the art. It's a chance to learn from professionals and refine your skills. As Picasso said, "Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist." Invest in your learning journey to excel.

And to learn like a pro - you have to learn from the pros :) - Invest in yourself.
Stage 3: Discover Your Style!
The final stage is about discovering your unique artistic style. It's a thrilling yet intimidating phase. You've learned the "How" and "Why," but now it's time to venture on your own artistic path.
When I started, I didn't know what "my style" was either. It's natural to feel apprehensive. But take that first step. Explore different subjects and styles until you find what resonates with you. Perhaps it's flowers, botanical details, abstract, or something entirely different. Embrace experimentation.
Remember, art has no strict rules. Everyone develops their own style over time. Dedicate yourself to your craft, and you'll flourish. Art is a journey of self-discovery and creativity, and there are no limits to where it can take you.
